Transform Your Garden with Fresh Lawn
Whether you’re looking to refresh your garden or start a new lawn from scratch, laying turf is a straightforward way to achieve a lush, green space. Here’s a practical step-by-step guide to help you lay turf successfully, ensuring your garden flourishes for years to come.
Step 1: Prepare the Ground
Begin by clearing the area of any old grass, weeds, stones, and debris. Use a spade or turf cutter for effective removal. Once cleared, dig over the soil to a depth of about 15cm, breaking up any clumps and removing roots.
Level the ground using a rake, ensuring the surface is even and slightly firm. If the quality ofyour soil is poor, work in some compost or topsoil for improved fertility.
Step 2: Measure and Order Turf
Measure your lawn area carefully and order enough turf rolls to cover it, allowing a little extra for trimming and shaping.
Turf should be laid as soon as possible after delivery, ideally within 24 hours, to prevent drying out.
Step 3: Lay the Turf
Start laying turf along a straight edge, such as a path or fence. Unroll each piece gently and press it down to ensure contact with the soil.
Butt each roll tightly against the next, staggering the joints to create a brickwork pattern. Avoid gaps between rolls, as these can dry out and leave unsightly lines.
Step 4: Trim and Shape
Use a sharp knife or edging tool to trim the turf to fit curves, corners, and edges. Take care not to stretch or overlap the rolls.
Excess turf can be used to patch any missed spots.
Step 5: Water Thoroughly
Once all the turf is laid, water it well using a hose or sprinkler. The soil beneath should be moist but not waterlogged.
Continue watering daily for the first couple of weeks, especially during dry spells, to help the turf establish roots.
Step 6: Maintenance After Laying
Avoid walking on the turf for at least a fortnight to allow roots to settle. Mow for the first time once the grass reaches around 5cm, taking care not to cut it too short.
Keep up with regular watering and gradually introduce fertiliser as the lawn matures.
By following these steps, you’ll have a beautiful, healthy lawn that’s the envy of the neighbourhood. Happy gardening!
